Dietary comparison of age-0 sturgeon (<i>Scaphirhynchus sp.</i>) between upper and lower Missouri River basins

Understanding potential limiting factors affecting population growth of the endangered pallid sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus albus, is important in upper (UMOR) and lower Missouri River (LMOR) basins. The UMOR upstream several reservoirs generally has more natural habitat features, whereas LMOR downstream these been channelized to support navigation. In both sections, sturgeon recruitment age-1 a concern, but hypothesized for different reasons. One hypothesis centers on food limitation age-0 fish, which not considered an issue UMOR, evaluating this challenging given rarity sturgeon. As result, related, abundant shovelnose (S. platorhynchus) as surrogate assess food-related hypotheses.
